Izayoi is a Japanese Kitsune who takes the appearance of a middle-aged woman. When asked, Izayoi refers to her physically depicted age as she cant' remember her actual age, and states that she is 32. She over 500 years old, however, and was born just as the Edo Period of Japanese history was starting. She has long, silvery-white hair that she usually keeps braided and wears a traditional kimono, but doesn't wear it in a manner that would be considered proper or traditional.

History

Izayoi's earlier years have been lost to her memory and the ages, but she recalls enjoying life in the booming city of Osaka, which was a very important place at that period in time, due to the bustling economy that resulted from Japan's unification under the Tokugawa Shogunate. She does remember her family distinctly however, and has 5 brothers and 3 sister, of which she is the eldest. She left her family once she got her first tail and was able to disguise herself as a human woman. Normally, mingling with humans was frowned upon, but since she had her parent's permission to live as she wished, nothing came of it.

She moved into the Osakan ghettos, making a living doing calligraphy and fortune-telling. The latter came very natural to her, and moreso because her predictions were rather accurate. She supposedly made a merchant very, very wealthy by instructing him not to send his trading ships on a voyage, only to have a Typhoon blow through the harbor the next day, which would have sunk every last one. Since his ships were the only ones undamaged, he not only made his own shipments, but rented out the use of his boats to others.

As payment for her prediction, the Merchant offered her marriage, which she accepted. It was a fairly platonic relationship, one that only served to enhance his standing as a man with a stable household, and herself so she could improve her standard of living. After a few years, it was obvious that she was not human, since she hadn't aged in that time. She left soon after, but remained in Osaka.

It wasn't until after the Meiji Restoration that she started to become homesick. She went back to her family, and remained there while the World Wars raged on. After the Japanese surrender of World War Two, she moved back to Osaka, and then in the late 1980's, moved to Shinjuku Ward in Tokyo. She moved between her home in Shinjuku, and another home she maintained in Shibuya until late 2008, when she then moved to the island of Yuriba.

Personality

Izayoi is, like many Kitsune, playful and curious. She enjoys jokes and riddles, and loves to make friends and have fun with them. She says often that she likes modern Japan more than feudal Japan, since the latter proved rather reserved and stuffy. She's also rather friendly with other mythological Japanese creatures, and is rather knowledgeable about them. She also enjoys reading about the mythology from other countries, finding such stories fascinating.

Abilities

Izayoi has little power, when it comes to most Kitsune. She's not skilled with illusions or curses, but excels in Divination and Fortune-Telling. While sometimes obscure, she's quite accurate with her predictions. She also loves calligraphy, and is especially good Shodō.

Relationships

As of yet, she hasn't made any significant friends, but has met a handful of potentials!

Friends

None, as of yet, but given her friendly nature, this is likely to change.

Significant Others

None yet.

Trivia

Izayoi's name is written as 咲夜 in Kanji and as さくや in Katakana. Both mean sixteenth night, which in this case, refers to the full moon.
