Remnant

Remnants, also known as echoes, are the closest Yuriban equivalent to ghosts. As Yuriban religion believes strongly in rebirth, the idea that a person's spirit or soul being stuck without rebirth is considered deeply offensive and impossible. However, they do believe in remnants, which are seen as something more akin to the 'psychic residue' theory of what causes ghosts, although in Yuriban lore, remnants or echoes can occur even from still living persons.

A remnant may form either unintentionally or through deliberate action. Most encountered will be of the first variety, created when a surge in magic is aligned with an intense, almost always negative, emotion. These two powerful forces interact to create a sort of afterimage or crystallization of the person's emotions and thought patterns at that moment in time. These remnants are often unaware of what they are and usually can only be dealt with via a cleansing ceremony worked by a priestess or through those who encounter them finding a way to make them aware of their true status and achieve emotional catharsis or closure.

When a remnant is created deliberately, it is instead referred to as an echo. Echos are usually aware that they are, rather than a whole person, something akin to a cognizant memory bank or limited artificial intelligence. The degree of steps and powers invested in the ritual to create an echo influences their depth of recall. A quickly created echo might, for example, be designed to appear only when a particular book or door is opened, just long enough to check for identification or otherwise assess a visitor. In contrast, investing weeks, sometimes even months into a creation ritual, can create an echo that is often virtually indistinguishable from a person at first blush, although they can be detected by their lack of a full soul or spiritual presence, as well as the inability to retain new information for longer than a week. Most often, however, they are crafted to be limited to a particular skill, knowledge, or other subarea in awareness. For example, an echo may be created and exist only for the purpose of teaching a particular ritual; in this case, they may have a vast knowledge of the ritual and related areas, but would be unlikely to be able to remember people they knew in their lifetime, or to answer questions related to areas other than their focus. Echoes are generally created with a tie to a specific object; if the object that their spell is invested in is broken or the spell is unraveled or otherwise disrupted, they disappear. Many also are designed to fade away over time.
