Peridot

Peridot is a gemstone relatively common in Yuriba.

Geology

Peridot is the translucent, gem-quality form of olivine, a type of rock that is abundant in Yuriba due to the island's volcanic nature. Deposits of peridot can be found further towards the northern end of the island, particularly in the foothills where the Yuriba River climbs towards the mountains. Typically these deposits are located in underground cave networks and mined laboriously using hand tools, most often by oreads. However, this tends to be a laborious process, and the location of individual mines is often a closely-held secret among certain oread groups and families.

Yuriban peridot tends to be of a more intense shade of green than typical peridot. Certain mines in the north of the island produce stones that are almost oak-green. All varieties of native peridot can easily be mistaken for emeralds.

Cultural factors

The deep green peridots from the far northern caverns are believed to hold a special significance by some natives. The oak-like colour of these stones is considered a sign of endurance in the face of untimely destruction, particularly given that more of these stones tend to appear on the market after earthquakes, potential eruptions or other periods of activity associated with Inishie. They are often purchased as symbols with an almost cathartic emotional value. Tiny peridot lockets and bits of jewelry are believed to symbolize the finding of serenity in a crisis, just like the gem itself is (supposedly) a tiny spark of beauty within the rock left by the volcano.

Peridot tends to be relatively inexpensive in comparison to other ornamental stones found in Yuriba, owing to the high concentrations of olivine making up the island's base rock.
