Talk:Marriage

There's something that's not specified on any other article, and it would best fit in this one; How does the yuriban society react to the idea of marriage between a male individual and a woman? Thank you!

Considering that the idea of 'Male' is completely foreign to Yuriban Society... I would guess it doesn't really react at all?

- Kaleaithne

I'm mildly bored, and feel like jumping in on this. Now, personal preferences aside...wouldn't there be some level of heterophobia? In an "ideal" setting, I mean. In our society, hell, in most societies, homosexuality was completely foreign-- it was just a weird thing. Only fleeting mentions in religious texts (I can only say this for sure with the "big" faiths-- I honestly have no idea regarding asiatic ones, so I could be completely off base, here) saying it's a bad bad thing. But, whatever. Anywho; historically, the unknown or farcical has drawn more fear, than anything else. If you disregard the majority of the population being "foreigners" (and, thus, would know of heterosexuality as an "alternative"), could it be feasible that heterophobia could arise, or develop, if ever the subject were IC'ly broached with the "natives"? Anywho. I'm going back to comics, before I say anything else to sound kinda screwy. ;)

It's essentially like marriage between a woman and an anteater, from the native point of view. There's just no emotional connection that can be made. Memetic reproduction requires fundamentally "compatible" psyches in the same way that physical reproduction requires compatible body parts. From the Yuriban (and dare I say wider?) point of view, men and women don't think the same, so the idea of any kind of sexual/romantic/emotional relationship makes no sense.

Well, taboo subjects aside (bestiality, yay!), I think that sorta makes sense. Maybe Yuriban society is more enlightened than that of humanity as a whole, and the unknown (or the untried, the unthinkable, in this case) doesn't quite creep 'em out. My initial problem with that (not a literal problem, so much as...I guess you could say it looks inconsistent?), is when you compare mimetic reproduction to physical reproduction, or more specifically, compatible psyche's with compatible genitalia. After all, dogs and humans don't have compatible genitalia, in anything other than the broadest physical sense. And with that incompatibility comes a sense of disgust and revulsion, at the idea of a man and a dog coupling. Which than brings up another point; could men be considered a different species, in the same sense that chimps could? If you look at the 'norm' regarding reproduction (mimetic), a man and a woman would be incompatible (if we follow your point about men and women thinking differently), and thus, a man could be considered a different species. Thus, could this argument really boil down to the openness of Yuribans regarding bestiality? Y'know, Nazi's hated bestiality.

It /is/ considered bestiality; you go Underhill and talk about having sex with a man and most people are going to treat you exactly like you would if you went to the grocery store and talked about your boyfriend the chimpanzee here. That said, those living in the village are more or less aware that the rest of the world doesn't see men as a different species. However, the fact that breis, for example, is too /polite/ to tell people who date men that they are creepy perverts, it doesn't mean she doesn't think it. And really, most natives are going to seriously, seriously think it. A different species is definitely what you're looking at - take a look at the Male article, for example. But, in essence, in a Yuriban perception, the psyche/soul is the primary reproductive organ, not the genitals. Different species; incompatible psyches. --breisleach 04:30, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

The article on the 'Male' species, plus the various references to heterosexuality in other articles, never mention the possibility of a marriage between a man and a woman; although it is made evident that in the Yuriban society it is considered like bestiality, this article does not touch the topic at all. While all other articles do have references to this as comparison with views of other, more normal, social realities, this one doesn't. That should be added, as part of the way of taking this article out of the oblivion of the stubs. Thank you!

Priestess list

Added the list for convenience. These obviously aren't the only willing priestesses/justices of the peace or whomever on the isle, so if you have a character who isn't mentioned there, feel free to add her. Mira 00:40, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
