Yuriban Tarot

A representation of the backs of the Yuriban Tarot

The Yuriban Tarot is a set of Tarot cards that made their debut in January of 2006, as part of the prizes given out for the New Year. The deck is, by and large a standard Tarot deck consisting of 78 cards, each meticulously illustrated in color, with a small entry regarding the meaning and symbolism, and story behind the card. The backs of the cards are burgundy, with a the silhouette of two long-stemmed lillies in white, twined around eachother. Also, like a standard Tarot deck, the cards are divided into the Major Arcana, cards such as The Magician, Strength, The Sun, and the Wheel of Fortune, and the Minor Arcana including the number and face cards. The Major Arcana, and face cards of the Minor Arcana are a "Who's Who" of well-known residents of the island. The rest of the Minor Arcana describe the four elements, and embodiments of each, Sylph, Undine, Salamander, and Dryad.

The deck is slightly different from a normal deck, in that all representations of male figures have been replaced with an appropriate female representation. Other than that, the usual associated symbolism associated with the cards is left intact.

The cards are said to have some function beyond being a collectible. Over the years, their exact effects have been winnowed out through trial and error, but their exact uses, however, remain a mystery.

The case of cards is made of high-quality leather, stitched together, and stamped with a lily, colored in pink. A magnetic flap holds the case shut. Either the cards or the deck seem to hold a magic about it, replenishing whatever cards that are pulled from the deck and given away. How they came into being is a mystery, as the entire case of cards mysteriously showed up one day on the front doorstep of Maison Yuriba.

The cards' creator is purported to live somewhere on the island, and might answer questions, if you ask them of her.
