Kumiko Yumemiya is a woman in her mid-twenties known for being brooding, stylish, and somewhat awkward. She carries around a prosthetic limb with wires trailing out of the end, frequently fiddles with smoking related paraphernalia but never smokes, and allegedly has a curse of invisible pink unicorn. She denies ever being a smoker, denies having a curse, and avoids much mention about the arm other than mumbling something about repairing a robot named Shizuka.

Despite her juxtaposition set of situations as they appears to others, she insists her life on the island is not complicated and that the concern of others with these things is an overreaction.

Kumiko is currently building Yuriba Theater and resides in the loft above, though for her first year of residence she lived in a room in the Rozen Mansion.

Appearance and Dress

Kumiko is a tall, lanky woman in her mid-twenties. She has erratic, asymmetrical black hair parted from the right side of her head and clipped with a purple patent leather barrette to nearly cover one eye. Her grey-green eyes are usually lined with black eyeliner and silvery eyeshadow. A single crystal teardrop earring dangles from her left ear, and a silver stud is found on the left side of her bottom lip.

Kumiko is razor thin, but not in a particularly appealing kind of way - she is, in fact, probably too thin and without anything to call 'hips'. Because of this she appears sort of top heavy although her bust isn't actually all that large in technical terms. Her legs are very long, and probably her best feature.

She usually wears suits and classy dresses, though if caught at the right time she can be found dressed like a mechanic though few have ever seen her that way.

Personality

Obsession with the Folding House

Kumiko is noticeably obsessed with the Folding House mystery of Yuriba.

By early 2009, Kumiko had spent several months of her own time on expeditions within the house, compiling her own notes on the strange place. She managed to ascertain several clues about the house that she discovered to overlap with Thalamasa's, confirming this after she managed to convince Thalamasa into giving her the coveted Folding House Solver, which appeared at the time to be nothing more than a rock on a string. When asked about the circumstances, Kumiko mumbled something vague about 'cabbits', 'science' and 'failure'.

She Who Does Not Smoke

When Kumiko is uncomfortable or feeling awkward - which is to say a lot of the time - she often fiddles with a very shiny silver cigarette case and matching torch lighter. When she opens the cigarette case it can be seen that there is nothing inside. Some have claimed to see her smoke cigarettes before, a claim which she denies passionately. When asked when she quit smoking, she replied that she has never smoked in her life.

The Arm

Kumiko carries around a limp, lifeless prosthetic arm everywhere she goes, even to bed. She explains to others that it is a remnant of Shizuka. When others ask if Shizuka was a robot or a cyborg, she becomes agitated and usually terminates the conversation.

Given her background in robotics and computing science, nobody can say much for certain about Shizuka and whether or not Kumiko was the one who made her - or even how lifelike she was. Kumiko claims that Shizuka is mid-repair and that repairs are going slow given the lack of technological resources on the island.

Some have speculated that Kumiko might have been involved with Shizuka, though Kumiko dismisses these claims with a laugh.

Invisible Pink Unicorn

On occasion people have told Kumiko that she has a particular glow about her, with a concentration near her third eye. This has led some to speculate (or joke) that she has the curse of the Invisible Pink Unicorn - especially since Kumiko apparently can't see the effects of this hypothetical curse - and to Kumiko, if she can't see it herself then it doesn't exist. She insists that this is all some practical joke, denies having any such properties, and generally thinks that people have too much time on their hands.

Where She Hides

You're likely to find Kumiko around the Yuriba Theater, the Rozen Mansion, or meditating at the Great Sakura of the Sakura Retreat near Yuriba Park.

She occasionally hangs out at Leona's Bar and Girl, though not often anymore as she tends to find the place vapid and boring for the most part.

Unlucky in Love

Kumiko can often be found in the company of Anna, Gin (Suigintou of the Rozen Maiden, Pia, or Nadie - all of who she considers good friends. Kassy Talalupe was her best friend before disappearing from the island some time in 2009, though she has been seen on rare occassion since.

It is unknown as to whether or not she has been in a relationship with anyone on the island, though rumor has it that she has terrible luck in love having been scorned somewhat by Cordelia and Lily. Though it is difficult to tell if either case was merely miscommunication rather rejection, especially considering Kumiko's lack of interpersonal skills. Although bravely (and finally?) confronting her feelings about Pia, she was again turned down and this plays a considerable role in the depression she began experiencing in late February of 2010.

When asked about her relationships, Kumiko shrugs, and doesn't give an answer. Friends maintain that she has never been in a relationship, and that her attitude is as equally romantic as it is skeptical. She maintains an open mind.

Friends of hers confess that she has refused most if not all forward sexual advances presented to her and is likely to continue doing so while outside of a relationship. Sex is not very high on her priority list.

The Funk

Kumiko disappeared from the island around about February 26th, 2010, and returned September 25th, 2010. Nobody knew her whereabouts, but rumor had it that she was away to remedy a bad case of heartbreak. Other rumors told of an abusive relationship, though nobody has ever dared to ask. This may or may not have been true, as villagers report that they had seen her at her favorite meditation spot, The Great Sakura. Her close friends seem to be of consensus that she was at the very least depressed, which is to say she was in a funk.
